WELCOME TO YOUR BRAVE NEW WORLD…

Welcome back readers!

Unnamed Chinese aircraft-carrier . . .

We have been busy formenting revolution, making music and keeping bread on the table, which is why there have been no communiqués for a while . .

However, the world has not stopped turning, and we are now standing at the threshold of the Great Resource War, which is being fought by proxy forces in Syria; an election between two State Stooges in the USA. and across Europe a wave of anger at the ongoing theft of their public estate by the same ruling class who only begrudgingly relaxed their death-cold grip after the slaughter of the First Imperial World War.

Meanwhile, in Africa and parts of Asia, the grotesque leviathan of endless consumption is being steered by the forces of Chinese economic power and US military blackmail, turning rainforests into millions of obese, waddling children and ultimately – despite the bleating denials of corporate patsies – melting the polar ice at a faster rate than at any time in recorded human history.

And most of this goes either unnoticed, or is presented in some distorted, back-to-front fashion. Black becomes white, white becomes black; freedom becomes an illusion, and power is only purchased by money. Democracy claims to protect the minorities, but is in fact the dominance of the ‘silent’ – or disempowered – majority crushing the minority into silence. The silence is used to justify whatever sociopathic behaviour the ruling class figures leads to less opposition and increased profits,

The media, which originally aimed to explain now aims to persuade; and as for the freedom of speech – the more that’s said, the less we can actually say.

After the Riots which swept through England last Summer, the Establishment decided that justice should be swift and harsh. People should be punished with the full weight of the law if they are caught threatening the sacrosanct principles of Property and Business. Teenagers were given custodial sentences of two or three years for petty theft committed in a state of spontaneous disorder.

All this was forgotten, however, in the pseudo-liberal bleatings of attention-hungry politicians and media wanabees and has beens adding to the chorus of disapproval at the ‘evil Russkies’ reverting to form and locking up the ( entertainingly saucy) women of Pussy Riot.

It’s just strange that those same voices remained silent over the imprisoning of (the Pink Floyd’s guitarist) David Gilmour’s son – who got a 2 year prison sentence for swinging from a flagpole during the student demonstrations last year.

In fact, there was implicit, if not overt, support over the last year from many of those ‘concerned voices’ for the swift retribution against the ‘rioters’ of Summer 2011; with sentences of two years for stealing a bottle of mineral water being a good example of the disproportionate treatment given to the poor compared to the rich, who have literally looted the public coffers with no penalties at all.

Men who have bankrupted their countries’ treasuries; playing poker with billions of pounds that they neither own or have earned; who have trousered millions in bonuses for making non-existent profits on rigged deals are (at worst) retiring with vast pensions or moving up the ladder to perpetrate more theft from the public purse. As they are ultimately the paymasters of our ‘representatives’ – who actually represent no-one but themselves and their corporate bagmen – they don’t need to fear the law; they pay for it to be written and enacted with the proceeds the labour of millions of underpaid workers. And as they slowly strangle the state to death, the state is dying in all its beneficient social aspects. Our taxes now just pay for the state as  a machine of control and repression, the guarantor of the slowly ossifying status quo;  all those libraries, swimming pools, town halls are being sold off to provide ‘luxury apartments’ for the narcissistic, shallow children of the upper class who are now doing ‘so well’ in the media, and all those associated and nepotistic jobs that ultimately produce nothing except debt for the masses and profit for the piggery.

To keep us all happy, we are offered a quick fix of a Royal Jubilee followed by the international corporate hijacking of human endeavour – the Olympic Games. In Britain, we all know that there’s going to be a really bad hangover – the sort where you wake up the morning after a night out in the pub and realise your last memory is standing on the bar shouting ‘Drinks on me !’ before punching your boss and dropping your mobile in a pint of beer.

After the Tory Coalition Government produced the most risible Budget in modern times, which tried to raise money on the heat of a pie, people slowly realised that everything fought for by the working people of the last century was being stolen back – not just bit-by-bit but in incomprehensible billions.

With drought searing the Mid-West of the USA, and vast amounts of subsidised corn now being turned into ethanol to keep their sacred cars on their crumbling freeways, there is a real danger that their will be massive price rises on all sorts of foodstuffs. This will no doubt lead to even more unrest across the world, often in countries that are already on the verge of collapse as coherent social systems.

Of course everyone knows that the Governments in the twentieth century resolved these problems twice in a hundred years with mass slaughter, followed by disease and famine; and since then the USA has been in an almost perpetual state of war with at least some part of the world’s population.

Once Syria has been reduced to rubble run by the sort of people who are currently destroying the ancient shrines in Mali, the USA and its friends – the autocratic fundamentalist-financing billionaires of the oil kingdoms will turn their attention to Iran. And then Russia, with the aim of exploiting the vast mineral resources lying under the melting permafrost on the Siberian tundra.

Then it’s the big one with China . . . or at least, that’s how the fantasy goes . . .

So hold tight, the ride is just about to begin . . .

NATO strike a civilian area, Majer, Libya

A report [by Mark  Urban] on tonight’s Newsnight [BBC2] [18th Jan 2012] has revealed that – contrary to the statements that the British Government ministers made to Parliament, the press and the people – British forces were aiding and abetting the 2011 uprising in Libya with Special Forces and armaments.

The arguments about how far the UK should go were thrashed out in a series of meetings of the National Security Council at Downing Street. Under the chairmanship of Prime Minister David Cameron, its key members were:

  • Chief of the Defence Staff General Sir David Richards
  • Defence Secretary Liam Fox
  • Foreign Secretary William Hague

Mr Cameron’s chief of staff, Ed Llewellyn, was a key voice in urging action following start of the Libyan revolution last February, say Whitehall insiders . . . key figures in the Downing Street discussions were convinced that air strikes alone would not achieve the result they wanted. At sessions of the National Security Council, Gen Richards and Mr Fox made the case for planning to provide training and equipment for the revolutionary forces of the NTC.

This is in clear breach of any international law – the interference in the internal affairs of a sovereign state which has not been sanctioned by the UN or any other international body.

It is no surprise that at the centre of the plot to deceive Parliament were the now-disgraced Liam Fox, and William Hague – the man who, according to Wikileaks transcripts of US Embassy documents, promised before the last election to increase Britain’s expenditure on US weaponry if the Tories got back into power.

The report raises serious questions about what is being currently done in Syria – which as various commentators have been pointing out – is currently being destabilised in a similar way to Libya.

The British coalition Government, along with other NATO/ US stooges such as Sarkozy, paraded themselves alongside the shadowy replacements for Gadaffi, trumpeting slogans of victory for democracy soon after his murder.

However, the truth of what is happening in Libya, now that the ravenous media of the West have moved on to Syria, following their masters’ whistle and spouting the same mix of rumour and infotainment from ‘intelligence sources’ – is much murkier.

An article by Franklin Lamb in Counterpunch reveals that since the West {US/UK Axis] moved on to Syria, the Libyan ‘revolution’ has become increasingly fragile;

There is clear and growing pro-Gadhafi political and military activity here and it is why NTC leader Mustapha Abdul Jalil, the other day warned against the Gadhafi children raising an insurrection.  Aisha Gadhafi, given Saif’s current incarceration, is perhaps the likely leader.

Every night more pro-Gadhafi graffiti appears on street walls, buildings and around Green (Martyrs Square).  Activists, and there appear to be more every day, assert that so far the NTC has not attacked them and they feel fairly free to speak  out and even organize.  It is anyone’s guess how long this situation will exist before a violent crackdown and open fighting.

It is difficult to gage the anti-NTC/ pro-Gadhafi mix and the extent to what extent each is propelling increasingly unpredictable events in Libya.

There is also a growing awareness of the cost of NATO’s bombing campaign, unreported in the Western mediatainment;

NATO has already lost much of its claimed public relations boost following its Halloween night ending of the bombing.  One suspects that this is because of an accumulation of many more recently discovered cases of NATO bombing of civilians in Libya. The population today in Libya is increasingly furious because more and more cases are coming to light concerning the high numbers of children who have been killed by NATO.

In addition to the fury caused by the urinating GIs, NATO officials are being ridiculed for all their denials that their bombing missions here in Libya, numbering more than 11,000, caused civilians deaths and their claims that NATO forces conducted themselves according to  higher moral and military standards, and sometimes put themselves at risk to avoid civilian casualties. The claims remind some of a generation of similar ludicrous public relations campaign undertaken regularly by the Israeli government.

As a previous post demonstrated, the plan to overturn legitimate [if repressive or unstable] regimes in a number of countries over a five-year period was first formulated by the cabal inside the Bush regime headed by Cheney and his fellow travellers.

Iraq, Syria, Libya, Sudan, Somalia and eventually Iranthese were the countries on the list handed to General Wesley Clarke from ‘upstairs’ within days of the 9/11 Massacre – an event which was used by the Washington regime to justify both internal repression inside the USA itself, and a war without end across the globe.

You have been warned . . . !

Gen. Wesley Clarke, NATO, 2007 reveals US strategy of destabilisation

We can’t say that we weren’t all warned – the cornered beast will take down everything else when it goes . . . .

And for a great analysis of the West’s secret war on the Syrian state, read this . . .

What we are seeing in Syria is a deliberate and calculated campaign to bring down the Assad government so as to replace it with a regime “more compatible” with US interests in the region.

The blueprint for this project is essentially a report produced by the neo-conservative Brookings Institute for regime change in Iran in 2009. The report – “Which Path to Persia?”  – continues to be the generic strategic approach for US-led regime change in the region.

A rereading of it, together with the more recent “Towards a Post-Assad Syria” (which adopts the same language and perspective, but focuses on Syria, and was recently produced by two US neo-conservative think-tanks) illustrates how developments in Syria have been shaped according to the step-by-step approach detailed in the “Paths to Persia” report with the same key objective: regime change.

The authors of these reports include, among others, John Hannah and Martin Indyk, both former senior neo-conservative officials from the George W Bush/Dick Cheney administration, and both advocates for regime change in Syria. Not for the first time are we seeing a close alliance between US/British neo-cons with Islamists (including, reports show, some with links to al-Qaeda) working together to bring about regime change in an “enemy” state.

After the trashing of Iraq and the dismemberment of Libya, we can look forward to the destruction of Syria followed by an all-out war with Iran.

One suspects that the Russians are not standing idly by – they and their vast natural resources under the melting permafrost of Siberia are what the boys at World.com [USA] have their sights trained on – and once it starts moving, just watch Taiwan, home of 90% of the worlds hard-disk manafacture.

2012, here we come . . .

Syria & Sea Breeze 2011; USA heats up the Cold War

Sea Breeze 2011

The logo for the international  ‘Naval exercise’ Sea Breeze 2011. What’s the dove doing on it ? you might ask – and one wonders what the word Respect is doing on the graphic ? We didn’t think Americans could do irony . . . .

A recent article  throws a new light on the upheaval in Syria. It also suggests that the massive naval exercise that has just taken place off the coast of Ukraine has been another move in the Cold War strategy that the USA has never ceased to pursue against the Russian Federation.

For the first time, the USA has deployed ships carrying elements of its anti-ballistic missile defence system in the Black Sea , and is actively engaged in pulling in as many of Russia’s neighbours as possible into an obviously hostile alliance.

The two pertinent points that should be remembered here are these;

  • The USA is economically bankrupt, and reliant on imported fossil fuels. Its only claim to be the world’s premier superpower is its massive armed forces, which are spread out across the world ensuring that its access to other nations resources are secure.
  • The Russian Federation has vast gas and oilfields; and areas that were once inaccessible containing these and other resources are – with climate change –  becoming increasingly possible, and profitable, to exploit.

The article – from the publication Global Research –  is called  NATO Incorporates Libyan Experience For Global War Template [by Rick Rozoff], and first of all summarises how NATO, the world’s only active military alliance has been fighting ceaseless war, leading to the completely disproportionate ‘Defence’ budget in the USA.

Then he goes on to describe the ‘provocative’ naval exercises taking place near the Russian Black Sea Port; and how this is part of a jigsaw whereby the US military ’empire’ is attempting, despite – or maybe because of  – the looming bankruptcy of its economy to pursue a strategy of encirclement around Russia.

The Pentagon and NATO are currently concluding the Sea Breeze 2011 naval exercise in the Black Sea off the coast of Ukraine, near the headquarters of the Russian Black Sea Fleet based in Sebastopol. Participants include the U.S., Britain, Azerbaijan, Algeria, Belgium, Denmark, Georgia, Germany, Macedonia, Moldova, Sweden, Turkey and host nation Ukraine. All but Algeria and Moldova are Troop Contributing Nations for NATO’s Afghan war. The once-annual maneuvers resumed again last year after the Ukrainian parliament banned them in 2009. This year’s exercise was arranged on the initiative of chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff Admiral Michael Mullen. Last year’s Sea Breeze drills, the largest in the Black Sea, included 20 naval vessels, 13 aircraft and more than 1,600 military personnel from the U.S., Azerbaijan, Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Georgia, Germany, Greece, Moldova, Sweden, Turkey and Ukraine.

This year the guided missile cruiser USS Monterey joined the exercise. The warship is the first deployed to the Mediterranean, and now the Black Sea for the Pentagon’s Phased Adaptive Approach interceptor missile program, one which in upcoming years will include at least 40 Standard Missile-3 interceptors in Poland and Romania and on Aegis class destroyers and cruisers in the Mediterranean, Black and Baltic Seas. Upgraded versions of the missile, the Block IB, Block IIA and Block IIB, are seen by Russian political analysts and military commanders as threats to Russia’s long-range missiles and as such to the nation’s strategic potential.

The article then goes on to describe how this is part of a game plan in which the fall of the Assad regime in Syria, and its replacement by one more ‘friendly’ to the Western Axis would be a perfect way of excluding the Russian Fleet from vast areas of the globe . . .

As former Indian diplomat M K Bhadrakumar wrote in a recent column:

“Without doubt, the US is stepping up pressure on Russia’s Black Sea fleet. The US’s provocation is taking place against the backdrop of the turmoil in Syria. Russia is stubbornly blocking US attempts to drum up a case for Libya-style intervention in Syria. Moscow understands that a major reason for the US to push for regime change in Syria is to get the Russian naval base in that country wound up.

“The Syrian base is the only toehold Russia has in the Mediterranean region. The Black Sea Fleet counts on the Syrian base for sustaining any effective Mediterranean presence by the Russian navy. With the establishment of US military bases in Romania and the appearance of the US warship in the Black Sea region, the arc of encirclement is tightening.”

NATO’s illegal Wars of Terror

Saturday, June 4th, 2011

The arrest of Ratko Mladić in Sebia and his swift despatch to The Hague has been trumpeted by the members of NATO as a triumph for justice and a chance of closure for the victims of the devastating civil war following the break up of Yugoslavia.

A woman walks past graffiti of captured Bosnian Serb fugitive General Ratko Mladic in Belgrade

However, it may well be sending some uncomfortable shivers down the spines of the generals and political leaders of this aggressive, expansionist alliance.

NATO is acting as a law unto itself; as an extended arm of US military imperial ambition, since the break-up of the Soviet Union it has been the shield behind which the North American government pushes deep into territories it regards as malleable and ripe for conquest or extended disorder.

Since the NATO attacks on Yugoslavia in 1999 (which is still regarded as illegal by many), NATO has been involved in constant war. The result of that war was the dismemberment of the last non-aligned multi-ethnic state in Eastern Europe with the economic potential to pursue a successful future as a social-democratic Republic.

However, the USA – still with the Cold War agenda of pushing right up to the borders of Russia –  and Britain, with it’s slavish poodle stance to US foreign policy, as well as some sort of pathetic ambition to re-install the old decrepit and corrupt monarchies, teamed up to make sure that the whole place fell apart in spectacular fashion.

The main benefactor of all that death and destruction was – surprise, surprise – the USA, who turned a large part of the pseudo-state of Kosovo into a forward operating base in the East – Camp Bondsteel, a monstrosity  with a six-mile perimeter fence. A good description of its scale and the reasons it was constructed can be found here;

In June 1999, in the immediate aftermath of the bombing of Yugoslavia, US forces seized 1,000 acres of farmland in southeast Kosovo at Uresevic, near the Macedonian border, and began the construction of a camp. . .  Camp Bondsteel, the biggest “from scratch” foreign US military base since the Vietnam War  (…) It is located close to vital oil pipelines and energy corridors presently under construction, such as the US sponsored Trans-Balkan oil pipeline. As a result defence contractors—in particular Halliburton Oil subsidiary Brown & Root Services—are making a fortune

Since then, the ‘alliance’ – which should really be termed the AXIS, since that is what it most resembles, has been waging war across the globe, assuming the moral perogative to decide who deserves to live and die, and which regimes should fall and which should survive.

Whilst Libya struggles to stay in one piece, and even static border posts are being wiped out by UK Apache attack helicopters; the murderous regime in Bahrain – which is  persecuting doctors involved in helping wounded demonstrators – has announced it’s business as usual for the idle playboy sport of Formula 1.

Then as Jacob Zuma, President of South Africa was meeting Colonel Gadaffi in his bombed-out compound in Tripoli last week, the prospect of any deal brokered by the African Union seemed remoter than ever.

NATO – and, we are told, the insurgents in Benghazi –  rejected any peace deal which does not include the instant resignation of Gadaffi and the surrender of the Libyan Government. This is how far the NATO Command has moved from the ‘protection of civilian life’; it is now clearly and blatantly demanding regime change.

It will be interesting to see how many legislators in the organisation’s Parliaments notice this blatant disregard of the UN mandate, or bother to question the legality of this continuing bombardment of population centres and infastructure.

I reccommend Dispatch From TripoliNATO’s Feast of Blood by CYNTHIA McKINNEY (from Tripoli for Counterpunch.)

While serving on the House International Relations Committee from 1993 to 2003, it became clear to me that the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) was an anachronism. Founded in 1945 at the end of World War II, NATO was founded by the United States in response to the Soviet Union’s survival as a Communist state. NATO was the U.S. insurance policy that capitalist ownership and domination of European, Asian, and African economies would continue. This also would ensure the survival of the then-extant global apartheid.

As the drones still keep up the death-toll of civilians in Afghanistan and Pakistan (a sovereign country  which the USA has never declared war on), it is becoming more difficult to believe that this sort of aggressive illegal warfare will not be paid for further down the line.

Of course, the working populations in the NATO Axis are paying for the million – pound attacks, with their taxes now going to the corporate war machine rather than schools for their kids and hospitals for the sick and elderly; and the price is certainly being paid by the villagers and townsfolk who are decimated, murdered or permanently crippled by these attacks.

The US Government plans to double its drone fleet in just nine years – this in a country that can’t be bothered to provide general healthcare and where the middle-class unemployed are evicted to live with their families in cars and eat at soup kitchens . . .

An article in Wired magazine discusses the legality of these attacks;

Loyola Law School professor David Glazier, a former Navy surface warfare officer, said the pilots operating the drones from afar could — in theory — be hauled into court in the countries where the attacks occur. That’s because the CIA’s drone pilots aren’t combatants in a legal sense. “It is my opinion, as well as that of most other law-of-war scholars I know, that those who participate in hostilities without the combatant’s privilege do not violate the law of war by doing so, they simply gain no immunity from domestic laws,” he said. “Under this view CIA drone pilots are liable to prosecution under the law of any jurisdiction where attacks occur for any injuries, deaths or property damage they cause,” Glazier continued. “But under the legal theories adopted by our government in prosecuting Guantánamo detainees, these CIA officers as well as any higher-level government officials who have authorized or directed their attacks are committing war crimes.”

Another article deals with the ‘targetting’ of supposed ‘Taliban  residences’ which seemingly is often done by paid informers, who obviously have their own agendas. Civilian ‘collateral deaths’ seem to be a price the USA is happily prepared to risk – after all, they are neither white, nor American;

In April, 19 year-old Habibur Rehman made a videotaped “confession” of planting such devices, just before he was executed by the Taliban as an American spy. “I was given $122 to drop chips wrapped in cigarette paper at Al Qaeda and Taliban houses,” he said. If I was successful, I was told, I would be given thousands of dollars.”But Rehman says he didn’t just tag jihadists with the devices. “The money was good so I started throwing the chips all over. I knew people were dying because of what I was doing, but I needed the money,” he added. Which raises the possibility that the unmanned aircraft — America’s key weapons in its covert war on Pakistan’s jihadists and insurgents — may have been lead to the wrong targets.

Of course, whilst the US war machine keeps rolling along, supported by a bankrupt economy and the evermore depleted Western European nations, it is unlikely that we will see a procession of wizened Americans shuffling into the dock .

However, the balance of power in the world is changing faster than most people in the USA or even Europe fully comprehend, and it might just be that we watch the once arrogant and self-justifying warmongers of the NATO alliance standing shackled in the dock to answer charges of murder, mayhem and waging aggressive war far sooner than seems possible at the moment.

POST SCRIPT; Gaddafi’s daughter has taken the first step in treating these acts of remotely controlled warfare as crimes perpetrated in the countries where the political control is exercised.

The daughter of Muammar Gaddafi has filed lawsuits against NATO alleging war crimes in the air strikes that are said to have killed her relatives.

The lawsuits have been filed in Paris and Brussels naming France’s role in the attacks and Belgium as the base of the NATO alliance. The charges lodged by Aisha al-Gaddafi are based on the killings of the Libyan leader’s youngest son and three grandchildren; all three children were under the age of 12. One of the children was Aisha al-Gaddafi’s four-month-old daughter, Mastoura.

The suits do not name a specific defendant, but the complaints call upon the authorities to ‘find, identify and punish the perpetrators and the accomplices involved in the April 30 airstrike by the alliance’. Her attorneys state that NATO’s decision to target a civilian home constitutes a war crime.

Outlawing civil dissent under Obama & the Patriot Act

Thursday, May 26th, 2011

A couple of reminders about the truth behind the empty rhetoric of Obama on his grandstanding trip to Eire and Britain.

Firstly, an article from the magazine Counterpunch, which provides an overview of the (at least ) 2,600  arrests of activists protesting in the US since Obama’s inauguration.

These arrests have been for a whole spectrum of causes, including;

. . . . people protesting US wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, Guantanamo, strip mining, home foreclosures, nuclear weapons, immigration policies, police brutality, mistreatment of hotel workers, budget cutbacks, Blackwater, the mistreatment of Bradley Manning, and right wing efforts to cut back collective bargaining.

Examples include;

February 15, 2011.  A former CIA agent turned whistleblower was arrested and battered by police for standing silently and turning his back during a speech on the need for human rights in Egypt delivered by the US Secretary of State.   Veterans for Peace.

April 24, 2011. Sixteen protestors against nuclear weapons at the Nevada National Security Site were arrested after a sixty mile sacred walk from Las Vegas.  Nevada Desert Experience.  Pace e Bene.

July 6, 2010.  Seventy eight people protesting against police brutality in Oakland California and the trial involving a shooting by a BART police office.

March 4, 2009, nine people seeking to present a letter to CEO of Alliant Technologies outlining how weapons manufacturers were prosecuted as war criminals at the end of WWII were arrested in Eden Prairie, Minnesota.  Alliant Action.

Patriot Act poster

Another article in a Veterans Today article, posted by Susan Lindauer, who describes herself as;

the second non-Arab American ever indicted on the Patriot Act

is a comprehensive insight into the workings of the US secret state, and how it will persecute even its own, without any semblance of the ‘natural justice’ trumpeted as a democratic human right for everyone else by the US Government.

She goes on to describe the work that she had carried out for the US Government over the years ;

I had worked in anti-terrorism for almost a decade, covering Iraq and Libya, Yemen, Egypt and Malaysia at the United Nations. At the instruction of my CIA handler, I had delivered advance warnings about the 9/11 attack to the private staff of Attorney General John Ashcroft and the Office of Counter-Terrorism in August, 2001. FBI wire taps prove that I carried details of a comprehensive peace framework with Iraq up and down the hallowed corridors of Capitol Hill for months before the invasion, arguing that War was totally unnecessary.

She continues;

I delivered those papers to Democrats and Republicans alike; to my own second cousin, White House Chief of Staff Andrew Card; and to Secretary of State Colin Powell, who lived next door to my CIA handler. Gratis of the Patriot Act, we had the manila envelope and my hand written notes to Secretary Powell, dated a week before his infamous speech at the United Nations. My papers argued that no WMDs would be found inside Iraq, and that the peace framework could achieve all U.S. objectives without firing a shot.

She then  describes how she did what she describes as ‘the unthinkable’ . . .

I phoned the offices of Senator Trent Lott and Senator John McCain, requesting to testify before a brand new, blue ribbon Commission investigating Pre-War Intelligence. Proud and confident of my efforts, I had no idea Congress was planning to blame “bad intelligence” for the unpopular War.  Over night I became Public Enemy Number One on Capitol Hill . . . . Thirty days later I awoke to hear FBI agents pounding on my door. My nightmare on the Patriot Act lasted 5 years . . .

She describes how the Patriot Act grants prosecutors and police extraordinary powers of the sort that Kafka predicted in The Trial – ‘warrantless searches and FBI tracking surveillance’. She describes her time as a ‘suspect’ ;

Throughout five years of indictment, my attorneys and I never got to read a single FBI interview or grand jury statement. Under the Patriot Act, the whistleblower/defendant has no right to know who has accused him or her of what criminal activities, or the dates of the alleged offenses, or what laws got broken.

The interest in her was no doubt because of her contacts, and the sinister truths which started to emerge in the post-9/11 USA;

I knew that “sometime in October, 2001″ an Iraqi diplomat gave me the English translation of a book on depleted uranium, which showed how cancer rates and birth defects had spiked in Iraqi children. And I was quite certain that on October 14, 1999, an Iraqi diplomat asked me how to channel major financial contributions to the Presidential Campaign of George Bush and Dick Cheney.

Her reward for being an honest agent, and one obviously with some sort of ethical sensibility was being ;

. . . thrown in prison on a Texas military base without so much as a hearing—and threatened with indefinite detention and forcible drugging, to boot.

So next time you see someone standing at a podium with the Great Seal of the USA on the front, you can be assured that what they are saying will probably have no resemblance to the political reality of the lives of their own citizens . . .

OBL, Gaddafi, Wikileaks and targeted assassinations.

Sunday, May 15th, 2011

An interesting analysis of the half-lies and deceptions surrounding the death of Osama Bin Laden can be found in an article in Counterpunch by the famed journalist Alexander Cockburn. After deconstructing the contradictory streams of misinformation that flowed from the US Government in the days after the assassination, Cockburn analyses the sequence of events that led to the operation being scheduled at that time.

His conclusions are that ;

  • the USA and Pakistan had been aware of the compound for years

In fact, specific knowledge by US intelligence of the compound and its likely possible prime denizen goes back to 2005.

He writes;

The three-storey house has been a well-known feature of Abbottabad. Shaukat Qadir, a well-connected Pakistan Army officer, reported to CounterPunch from Pakistan: “For the record, this house has been under ISI surveillance while it was under construction. It was first raided in 2003, and the ISI just missed capturing al-Libi (he was later captured by the ISI close to Mardan in K-P Province). It has been raided on numerous occasions since.”

  • OBL was killed as a result of ‘entrapment’

Cockburn quotes Shaukut Qadir;

“The house where Osama had sought refuge belonged to two brothers from Mardan (a Pashtun dominated region of K-P) . . .  neither one has been identified among the dead. If Osama was followed to this house by constant tracking of his courier who, according to CIA reports, shouldn’t one, if not both brothers . . . have been present . . .? But they weren’t. Of the seven bodies left behind (a female, a child and five men of ages ranging from mid-twenties to mid-thirties), none have been identified as being either brother…. “ Inference: “Osama was sold out. The operation was the result of entrapment. An entrapment organized through one or more of his most trusted aides…”

  • The operation was carried out to pre-empt a Wikileaks release of unredacted intelligence that had been gained through torture at Guantánamo Bay Concentration Camp.

The raid was organised because information about the capture and torture of the aide who revealed the whereabouts of the compound was about to be revealed through the parallel releases of Wikileaks information. One version of the files were being put out in the Guardian and New York Times; they had received / bought them from an ex-Wikileaks employee and in this narrative, allowed the security services to redact any names or information deemed ‘unacceptable’ to be in the public domain. A comparison to the Wikileaks’ unredacted release of the same files immediately reveals the names that they had been most anxious to hide.

As Cockburn continues;

We can conclude, from this narrative, that when the unredacted WikiLeaks files surfaced, US intelligence concluded that Osama’s associates would soon figure out that the Americans had made the appropriate connections and conjectures and there the associates urged him to move on with all due haste. So Obama decided to send in the Seals.

Cockburn then suggests that targeted assassination has become both an accepted military aim and a political tool.

He points to the attack in Libya on April 30th;

Saturday, April 30 was reserved for the attempted assassination of Colonel Gaddafi, with the dropping of precision-guided bombs on the house of his son Saif, who died along with three grandchildren. Saif, then four, was in the Gaddafi family compound on April 15, 1986 when bombs ordered up by Ronald Reagan were dropped from F-111s, killing his 15-month old sister, adopted by Gaddafi 11 months earlier.  Thus have Reagan and Obama shared a target. ‘Decapitation’ – going for the enemy’s top guy – is now standard Nato strategy.

Would Obama have been briefed on the plan, or have signed off on a program of targeted assassination of Gaddafi? It seems a sure thing.

And as Cockburn concludes;

But Gaddafi survived. So Obama only had one bloodied feather in his cap when he gave one of the most morally repellent speeches I have ever heard delivered from the White House. Bush at least had the crude brio of a semi-literate jock when he vaunted America’s prowess. Obama’s “we nailed him” paragraphs of mendacity concluded with Dickensian Heepishness: “Tonight we are once again reminded that America can do whatever we set our mind to. That is the story of our history.”

To which we can add – yup! and the end of just about everyone else’s . . .

Can you believe it ?

Geronimo - A freedom fighter

Geronimo - American freedom fighter

The circus comes to town;

the Obama administration insisted the killing of Bin Laden was legal and not an execution, while human rights groups and international lawyers pressed the White House for more details of the mission.
Eric Holder, the US attorney-general, said the killing was justified and that had Bin Laden attempted to surrender, the US forces would have taken him alive.

Meanwhile a senior Pakistani intelligence official told the Guardian that members of the Bin Laden family were being held in custody in Pakistan, including his Yemeni-born wife, Amal Ahmed al-Sadah, and his 12-year-old daughter, who allegedly claimed her father had been shot in cold-blood in front of her.
The official did not confirm a report by al-Arabiya news that the daughter is claiming her father had been held first and then shot.

George Little, a CIA spokesman, denied Bin Laden had been held by US forces before being shot. “There is no indication that Bin Laden was somehow captured and later killed inside the compound. It would be wrong to suggest otherwise.”

Questions about the legality of the killing have grown after the White House backtracked on Tuesday on its initial account of the mission, admitting that Bin Laden had not been armed.

The White House spokesman, Jay Carney, refused to provide further details about the shooting in Abbottabad. The Obama administration has been forced on the defensive after offering conflicting accounts of what happened. Asked on Wednesday whether the team that killed Bin Laden had come under fire, Carney said the White House had gone to the limit in providing details and that any more would risk future operations. “I am not going to get into operational details,” he said.

Carney, asked about the legality of the killing, read from a statement, saying it was consistent with the laws of war and that if Bin Laden had surrendered, he would have been taken alive.

Holder, giving evidence to the Senate armed services committee, said it had not been a kill mission but “a kill or capture” mission. “If he had surrendered, attempted to surrender, I think we should obviously have accepted that, but there was no indication that he wanted to do that and therefore his killing was appropriate,” Holder said.

The attorney-general said Bin Laden had no intention of being captured. “Let me make something very clear, the operation in which Osama bin Laden was killed was lawful. He was the head of al-Qaida, an organisation that had conducted the attacks of September 11. He admitted his involvement,” Holder said.

Andrea Prasow, a Washington-based spokeswoman for Human Rights Watch, said: “Our position is that we do not have enough information to determine whether the killing of Bin Laden was lawful. We hope the US government will provide a more detailed accounting of what happened so we can understand if it was in fact lawful under either international humanitarian law – the so-called law of war – or under human rights law.”

Philippe Sands, a University College London professor currently writing a book on the making of modern international law, said much would depend on the exact circumstances of Bin Laden’s death. “If no one else was around, if they had him in a room unarmed and the building was covered, then it looks pretty bad,” Sands said . . . Benjamin Ferencz, an American lawyer who was a US prosecutor at the Nuremburg trials and who lives in New York state, asked whether the killing was justifiable self-defence or premeditated illegal assassination. He would have preferred he had been captured and put on trial.
Ferencz, 92, said : “The picture I get is that a bunch of highly trained, heavily armed soldiers find an old guy in pyjamas and shot him in the chest and head and that borders, without access to more facts, on murder.” He added: “Even [the head of the Luftwaffe Hermann] Göring had a right to trial.”

And if you think anything has changed in the last century, except a worldwide expansion of the Wild West, and its disregard for the rule of law and other nations’ territorial integrity and human rights;

4.52pm ET:

After the US special forces gave Osama bin Laden the nickname Geronimo, the native American leader’s tribe is asking for an apology from the White House.

In a letter to President Obama, Jeff Houser, chairman of the Fort Sill Apache tribe, descendents of Geronimo’s Chiricahua Apache Tribe, writes:

We are grateful that the United States was successful in its mission against Bin Laden, but associating Geronimo’s name with an international terrorist only perpetuates old stereotypes about Apaches.

In the 1800’s Geronimo and the Chiricahua Apache people were portrayed as savages. This portrayal was used as justification for the forced removal from their homelands and their subsequent imprisonment. Linking Geronimo’s name to an infamous terrorist only reinforces this false and defamatory stereotype.

And let us not forget, the USA’s oppression of the original North Americans continues – unremarked in the press, and ignored in the slavish rush to prostrate economies and societies before the great war machine.

The association of Geronimo’s name to Osama bin Laden is yet another degrading slap in the face to American Indians from another president and our federal government who waged an “unnecessary holocaust war” against American Indians in the forming of the America we have today. True American history shows Indians were never an enemy of this country. American Indians had every right to stand up for their true home land, way of life, freedom, civil liberties and right to self govern.
